THE MARKET SQUARE AND VIA BRIONA Also known as “the city’s sitting-room”, it is the heart of the historic centre of Domodossola. It is typically Renaissance in style with its palaces, balconies and protruding loggias, its arches and granite columns which date back to the 15th century. It has welcomed the market every Saturday all year round ever since it was requested by Beregario 1st in the year 917. From Piazza Mercato one can easily reach Via Briona which is considered to be the most characteristic street in Domodossola, and where one can discover the “Torre dell’Antica Palazzo del Vescovo”, a tower which dates back to the 14th century. PALAZZO MELLERIO THE MELLERIO PALACE Count James Mellerio, born in Domodossola in 1777 and named by Austrian Chancellor of the Kingdom-Lombardo Veneto not ever forget his Domodossola. After founded four scholarships for poor couples who wish to continue their studies at the seminary and then having purchased the Ursuline Convent to make the premises of primary schools for girls, conceived the draft of a set of high school. Mellerio then called the brother-in-law, the architect Gian Luca della Somaglia, and build him committed to a building suitable for this purpose. Work began in 1816 and November 5, 1818 "Mellerio Palace" was inaugurated. At his death the building was left to the town of Domodossola and for a time housed the court. Work recovery Mellerio Palace, were carried out between 2001 and 2002 by the Territorial House of Novara and VCO and the Municipality of Domodossola. The first floor of the building is being used to the town while the other three floors are twelve space accommodation construction popular. STAZIONE INTERNAZIONALE THE INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY STATION (in Giacomo Matteotti Square)Was planned by Architect Luigi Boffi (1846 – 1904) and was inaugurated along with the opening of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906. All the railway stations along the Simplon line, from the Swiss border to Arona were carried out by this same architect.
PALAZZO DI CITTA’ (Piazza Repubblica dell’Ossola) Progettato dall’arch. Leoni di Torino (1874). Fu sede del Governo Provvisorio della Repubblica dell’Ossola nel ‘44 durante l’occupazione nazista, mentre oggi è sede dell’amministrazione comunale. Al suo interno ospita la “Sala della Resistenza”, un’esposizione di testimonianze della gloriosa Repubblica dell’Ossola. Antistante il Palazzo di Città si erge il Monumento a Gian Giacomo Galletti (1789-1873), opera di Francesco Ricci, scultore vigezzino, che ricorda il grande benefattore ossolano. THE TOWN HALL ( in Repubblica dell’Ossola Square)Was planned by architect Leoni di Torino in 1874. During the nazi occupation it was used by the Ossola Republic temporary government, whereas today it hosts the Town Council offices and an exhibition “ Sala della Resistenza” which displays evidence of the glorious Repubblica dell’Ossola.In front of the Town Hall there is a monument, carried out by Valle Vigezzo sculptor Francesco Ricci, to commemorate the well known local benefactor, Gian Giacomo Galletti (1789 –1873).
THE WALLS AND MEDIEVAL TOWER Today we have very few traces of the fortification built around the entire city of Domodossola as defence against the continuous Swiss invasions during the 14th century. However, one can admire the ancient “Torretta Medioevale” in Via Monte Grappa (which has been integrated over the years), the “Corpo di Torre Angolare” in Via Canuto and a section of the wall in Via Facchinetti”.
COLLEGIATA DEI SANTI GERVASO E PROTASO
ST. GERVASO AND PROTASO COLLEGE ( In Church Square)The town’s Parish Church, rebuilt, between 1792 and 1797, from the remains of the 15th Century church and dedicated to the Milanese twins martyred during the 4th century a.c., was the work of the architect Matteo Zucchi. One can admire the ancient main door, which once belonged to the ancient Romanic church in Piazza Tibaldi; worked in “serpentino” (a typical Valle Ossola stone); frescos and decorations by the Valle Vigezzo artist, Lorenzo Peretti (1774-1851); the architrave with Carlo Magno in relief and the San Carlo Borromeo Chapel which exhibits an important painting which dates back to 1615, by Tanzio Da Varallo from Valsesia. PIAZZA FONTANA THE FOUNTAIN SQUARE This square sits in the heart of the district called “Motta”, and is so named due to an octagonal shaped fountain set in its centre. In 1844 an obelisk was added to the fountain and this monument can still be seen today. In the adjoining street, Via Carina one can admire the larch balconies, symbol of the Walser style of architecture – a people from the mountain areas of Ossola.
PALAZZO SILVA
SILVA PALACE (Via Silva) It was built by the Della Silva family between the 16th and 17th centuries and it is a rare example of one of the late-Renaissance noblemen’s houses which still exist in this area today. It was bought from the Galletti Foundation in 1881 and restored. Today it is both an art - gallery and the town museum, exhibiting a collection of weapons, furniture, coins and medals. PALAZZO SAN FRANCESCO
ST. FRANCESCO PALACE ( Piazza Convenzione) This palace was built on the outer walls of a 13th century church dedicated to San Francesco. Inside, one can admire its beautiful pillars with ornate capitals which support the aisle cross vaults. It has hosted the Galletti Foundation and the Natural Science Museum since 1912, exhibiting some rare objects such as the Simplon stage-coach, an early 20th century car and some of Geo Chavez’s relics, an aviator who died in Domodossola. At the moment this museum is closed for restoration.
SANTUARIO della MADONNA della NEVE Costruzione del 1600 su precedente edificio quattrocentesco. Sull’altare si presenta un affresco della Madonna e il Bambino appartenente già alla precedente costruzione; nel presbiterio è conservata un’importante tela del 1600 che rappresenta lo sposalizio della Vergine, realizzata dal pittore fiorentino Luigi Reali.
The “MADONNA DELLA NEVE” SANCTUARY This Sanctuary was rebuilt during the 17th century on the older 15th century building. A fresco representing the “Madonna e Bambino” which belonged to the older building, can be admired above the alter and there is a very important picture hanging in the presbytery painted by Florentine Luigi Reali during the 17th century and representing Virgin Mary’s Wedding.
