The Antigorio, Divedro and Formazza Valleys Travelling northwards from Domodossola along the main Simplon road, you come across Preglia, a small, essentially commercial village yet the largest in the Council of Crevoladossola. You are now going to discover a different type of landscape, in a district where all the little villages and valleys in upper Val d’Ossola, south of the Alps come under the wing of the “Antigorio, Divedro and Formazza Mountain Community”. The Council of Crevoladossola is made up of lots of little quaint villages and, Crevoladossola itself prides itself in its 13th century Romanic Church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Its mullion windowed bell tower has been well preserved over the years. Following the valley road which meanders through thick chestnut woods you reach Oira, a popular Ossola hamlet, especially renowned for it’s “Cat d’Matè”, a typical wine which goes down well with local cheeses and other Ossola dishes. Oira is also nicknamed “the garden” as its sheltered, sunny position is ideal for the growth of lush cultivations. If you gaze slightly to the right from Oira , in the distance you can glimpse the tip of a very high steeple with a few old buildings huddled around it. This is one of the oldest villages in Ossola - Montecrestese. Like many other communities, Montecrestese is made up of numerous little hamlets where ancient buildings, both public and private, are jealously looked after, being considered a true monumental heredity, a silent yet live testimonial to that ancient Roman community from years gone by. It would be interesting to visit the little Lepontic Temple in the village of Roldo and a few Menhir in Croppola.Continuing the journey northwards, after going through a narrow tunnel dug out of solid rock , suddenly you find yourself in a long deep valley with mountains soaring up on either side. The Antigorio and Formazza Valleys. The first town you encounter is Crodo, one of the largest towns in Ossola and, like Bognanco, its main activity is based on a spa. In fact, a large factory stretches out in an area called Bagni which, by exploiting the water which gushes from the famous “Lisiel” spring, produces and bottles mineral water and other soft drinks. It’s thanks to this Spring water that the “Crodino” ,a non alcoholic aperitif produced exclusively in Crodo, has become famous all over Europe. The magnificent gardens nearby are a perfect setting for thermal spa therapy. The imposing parish church “San Gaudenzio” (10th century) welcomes you to Baceno, Crodo’s neighbouring village. An extremely important religious building, now a National Monument, rich in frescos and architectural structures from different periods in the past. Floodlights illuminate this church by night and the effect is so enchanting that it looks like an “Ice-palace”. At Baceno the road forks out into two different directions. By taking the left fork you reach the Natural Park “Alpe Devero” while the right fork takes you up as far as the Walser Community in Formazza. Formazza, in local dialect “Pomattal,” a wedge shaped valley which cuts deep into the Central Alps and where the river “Toce” has its origin, rising from one of the highest and most breathtaking waterfalls in Europe “La Cascata del Toce” with a drop of 143 metres. Formazza was the oldest colony founded by the Walsers. They migrated from Canton Valais in Switzerland, crossing over the “Griess Pass” and settling in this alpine village during the 13th century. For many centuries Formazza was self governing, an independent republic having its own rules and regulations which the villagers observed attentively and its position was fundamental for communications between Italy and Europe, north of the Alps. Nowadays Formazza is mainly a mountain tourist resort with impressive hotels and quaint restaurants to be found in all its little villages and the inhabitants who are not involved in catering are either alpine guides or expert mountaineers. There are numerous exhilarating climbs which take you up to an altitude of 2,500 to 3,000 metres. In 1991 the “Veglia Devero Natural Park Association” was formed so as to protect the natural beauty of these two magnificent alpine pastures which have now become major tourist attractions offering spectacular walks, trekking and climbing at high altitudes. Leaving Baceno, the road winds past the little hamlets of Croveo and Goglio eventually arriving at a spacious car park where you can leave your car. A few yards on foot and the “Alp Devero” plain appears in all its splendour. Not only does Alpe Devero offer ski slopes in winter but also delightful walks for all tastes all year round. Alp Crampiolo and the Codelago Dam are two of the favourite excursions. In order to reach “Alp Veglia” by car, however, you have to follow another route through the Divedro valley as far as San Domenico in a town called Varzo. This is still part of the same Mountain Community. Varzo is a pretty little town nestled on the mountain slope above the main road. In the old part of the town you can visit the parish church dedicated to Saint George and a medieval tower which dates back to the 13th century. The little village San Domenico is a ski resort with a chair lift that carries you from 1,420 metres up to an altitude of 2,551 metres. Veglia is a pure, unspoilt alpine pasture where there is even a natural, sparkling water spring. Over the last few years the Park Association together with the Region of Piedmont have been organizing various activities to help understand the value of Veglia’s flora and fauna, including numerous excursions accompanied by experts.
