THE ANTRONA VALLEY The Antrona Valley, one of the most beautiful havens in Ossola, has a secluded, mysterious, wild feel about it, and even today preserves its old traditional habits and customs. The stream Ovesca, which flows through the Valley and into the river Toce , has its origin from two higher mountain streams, the Troncone and the Loranco.Villadossola is the doorway into the Antrona Valley and lies at its foot, on the Toce alluvial plain. It’s a busy town with a variety of shops and commercial activities. The ancient Romanesque church “San Bartolomeo” rises in the centre.Following the long, narrow winding road up past the little villages of Montescheno, Viganella and Antrona Schieranco you eventually reach Antronapiana, the last and main village in the valley. Antronapiana, literally “the Antrona Plain” got its name from the immense flatland that there used to be before a disastrous landslide struck on the 27th July 1642. The landslide swept away the parish church and 95 people along with it, leaving behind only sorrow and poverty.Unlike the other valleys, Antrona doesn’t depend entirely on tourism. In fact it is delightful to see how everything has been kept the same over the years; the old stone houses, the womenfolk who wear their long traditional dresses to the Sunday Mass and the lush woodlands and fresh pastures which surround it. It can be compared to a peaceful oasis which attracts those tourists who want to get away from their chaotic city life.Antonapiana is also a starting point for numerous mountain hikes and excursions and one of these takes you up to the famous Antrona Lake. This lake was formed when the 1642 landslide fell across the Troncone river, blocking its flow. Today it is an ideal spot for campers and picnickers. Another walk takes you up to Cheggio where you can admire a magnificent artificial lake called “Lago dei Cavalli” and where the view is breathtaking.

It was built during the second half of the 17th century, enhanced with splendid artistic elements carried out by Giulio Gualio from Antrona, among which the main altar, considered one of the most beautiful masterpieces in Baroque style in all of Piedmont. The font, which was saved from the ruins of the old church after the Pozzuoli landslide in 1642, was restored and can now be admired within the church.
